A trip to the dentist

Wind-up pearly whites

A couple weeks ago, I had my 6-month dental cleaning. The outcome of which was that I had to get a filling. The dentist didn't exactly say I had a cavity, but there was an odd discoloration in one of my left bottom teeth. There was mention that something could be happening under the surface of hte tooth and that I should get it filled.

Last week I had that filling done and though the cleanings aren't usually done by the actual dentist, this time we actually spent some time together. The outcome of our little chats pre- and post-filling was that apparently my dentist and I have some interesting things in common.

First off, I mentioned that I had the CD that was playing throughout the office. It was Natalie Merchant's Ophelia album.

"Yeah, it's a great album, who else do you listen to?"

"I'm a big fan of David Bowie, but more recently I'm loving the Scissor Sisters. There new album came out on Tuesday, and I'm going to their concert in Toronto on the 10th of October."

"Oh yeah, I like them. I was listening to them the other day and my son asked me if it was a man or a woman singing."

"Yeah, sometimes the lead singer sings in falsetto, so I can see his confusion," I said.

I was really surprised that he knew of the Scissor Sisters. They're quite big in the UK, but here in their homeland they haven't yet become a household name. Apparently in my dentist's household they were, though.

I'm not sure how volleyball came up, but I mentioned that I play volleyball during the summer on Tuesdays.

"I sometimes drive by some people playing volleyball at Cobb's Hill when I'm drving home from work," he said.

"Yep, I live on the opposite side of the road from from where they play. If it's on a Saturday, sometimes it's the group of guys I play with."

Admittedly this connection wasn't really that interesting, but apparently he lives up the road from me, and had possibly seen me playing volleyball.

Finally, the thing that really surprised me. He asked me if I did anything interesting this summer.

"Well, I didn't really do anythign to exciting. Oh, well there is the Twin Peaks Festival that I run with 3 other people. It takes place where they film the show Twin Peaks, and we get celebs to show up that were on the show."

"In Snoqualmie, Washington? I've been there a couple times, even stayed at that hotel... The Salish."

This totally caught me off guard. I don't usually meet people that really know much abotu the show, let alone ones that have stayed in a hotel that appeared on the series. Apparently his wife works (or worked) for Eddie Bauer, and it was based out of Redmond, Washington. She travels there ever month or so, and he'd gone out that way a couple times with her.

I'm surprised we fit in so much dialog because most of the time he had stuff in my mouth, but it was quite an interesting trip to the dentist. I left the dentist surprised that he was so cool. :)
