Mulholland Drive

Date published: October 21, 2001

Just got back from seeing Mulholland Drive, the new David Lynch movie. I'm never let down by his movies. I go into his movies thinking "Please don't let me down." Like I said, they never do.

What can I say about the movie...it reminds me most of David Lynch's Lost Highway. A very cerebral movie, where you have to really think about it. It also has a cyclical feeling to it, just like Lost Highway. It was also cool to see Lynch's long time friend and composer for most of Lynch's movies, Angelo Badalamenti. He has a small part in the movie. Of course, there is the theme of "twin" characters and stuggles with identity...as well as the ambiguous time theme apparent in many Lynch movies. The audio in the film was very well done, not only the music, but also just sound in general. In one scene, Lynch plays with ones conception of sound, making you wonder if the voice of the person is actually coming from that person or not. The film also had a beautiful stylized look about it, especially in the dress of the characters, again reminiscent of Lost Highway.

Unlike Lost Highway though, this movie seemed to progress more timely. One doesn't even notice that the movie is 2 and a half hours long.

Curious about what others thought I went to the CNN.com review of the movie...they were right in saying that the movie has "offbeat sound and lush color," But I couldn't believe that they were incorrect in some of their facts. First, they say "the brunette decides to call herself Gilda after seeing the name on a Rita Hayworth poster," when in fact she calls herself Rita. Next, they refer to Mr. Roque as "the mysterious midget in the glass-encased office," He was actually a six foot tall man in a wheelchair (though he was played by a midget...but the viewer does not know this).

Anyway, if you like David Lynch movies, I'm sure you'll like this one as well. If you don't tend to like David Lynch movies, you probably won't like this one either (though it is a possibility still). If you haven't ever seen a David Lynch movie...then go see this one anyway...at least then you'll know if you like one David Lynch movie.
